Tri-State Transportation Campaign Statement on Broadway Pedestrian Plazas
Mayor Bloomberg and NYCDOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan’s bold experiment has been an unqualified success. The numbers prove it: Broadway is safer, Times Square is more pleasant, and traveling through the area is faster for pedestrians, bus riders, and drivers. We applaud the mayor for putting an end to the days of dangerously overcrowded Broadway sidewalks, and hope he will consider a similar approach on streets like 32nd Street near Penn Station, where pedestrians are routinely forced into the roadway. The success of car-free Times Square shows that a little innovation can go a long way to improve safety and livability in New York City.
