Statement from Kate Slevin, Tri-State Transportation Campaign Executive Director:
By signing the “Cross-Over” Mirror Bill (S3151/A1446) into law yesterday, Governor Cuomo sent a clear message that he is serious about improving the safety of New York’s streets. This law is a simple solution that will save lives.
Drivers of large trucks have a difficult time seeing over their hoods, and the consequences of this blind spot are particularly perilous for small children, who are completely out of view if they’re less than 5 feet from the truck. By requiring convex mirrors on these trucks, this law will assure that their drivers will be able to see what is happening in front of them. A typical mirror costs between $33 and $86, including installation and assembly — well worth the price of saving a life.
Tri-State Transportation Campaign is a nonprofit transportation policy group dedicated to creating a more balanced, environmentally friendly and equitable transportation system in Connecticut, New York and New Jersey.
